Canada at the World Cup – Brazil 2014
Canada’s bid to make this year’s World Cup may have stumbled in Honduras in 2012, but that didn’t mean there wasn’t any Canadian content in Brazil this summer – one linesman and a couple of Canadian-raised players all featured in the 2014 tournament, including a Scarborough native who started Saturday’s third-place match.
Who is Benito Floro?
Earlier today, Spanish sports tabloid Marca announced that Benito Floro would be Canada’s next national team boss. It seemed far-fetched, but Sportsnet quickly confirmed the rumour, leaving one question in many Canadians’ minds – who is Benito Floro Sanz, exactly? Most media outlets have jumped on the “former Real Madrid coach” tag, but in truth the 61-year-old left Real before current national team members Samuel Piette and Keven Aleman were even born.
The CSA responds: official statement on match-fixing
The Canadian Soccer Association has issued a statement regarding match-fixing and the Canadian Soccer League, replying to recent calls for more attention to this kind of corruption. I’d like to pretend I had something to do with this, having called out the CSA to take more accountability for the football being played under its banner, but really the CSA had little choice but to respond to all of the attention caused by the CBC story on match-fixing in the CSL.
